Abstract

Both within the US and internationally, school shootings have become more common and more deadly over time (Böckler et al., 2013; Follman et al., 2012). According to Böckler et al. (2013), who included college and university campuses in their sample, there were 1.1 instances of mass school shootings internationally per year in the 1980s, 3.6 per year in the 1990s, and 5.7 per year in the first 10 years of the new millennium. Böckler et al. (2013) relied on international press to identify 120 cases of mass school shootings globally. Of the 120 cases they identified, 76 (63%) were perpetrated in the US (Böckler et al., 2013).
