Abstract

This chapter proposes an accounting scheme to track how ideas and objects travel through and among social structures. Illustrations are drawn from studies of the diffusion of change in realms such as religion, art, medicine, farming, popular culture, fashion, and cuisine. Tarde (1898), Simmel (1904), Sorokin (1941) and Rogers (1962) are given particular attention.
