Abstract

The evaluation of work is fundamental to reward management. However, there may be tensions at a practical level between so-called ‘objective’ approaches and the reality of management and organizational settings. Three participant observation-derived cases are used to shed light on the ways in which evaluating and rewarding work need to be contextualized to particular settings. One conclusion from the chapter is that valuing work is influenced by the social interactions around the processes involved.
