Abstract

Increasingly, organizations are being pressured to open up about pay. However, pay transparency is not an “all or nothing” phenomenon. Instead, it is a multidimensional construct that can take on many different forms and operate at different levels. This chapter aims to provide an overview of how pay transparency is defined, focusing on three different forms of pay transparency: pay process; and pay outcome transparency; and pay communication restriction. In this chapter, we provide an overview of the current prevalence of each of the three types of transparency in organizations, of governmental regulations related to pay transparency, and of research on the consequences of the three forms of pay transparency.
