Abstract

It is often assumed that expressionism is a European trend and one that only occasionally appears in Latin America; however, a quick overview of regional painting is enough to give a sense of the existence of an independent expressionism, with its own local features but also sharing similarities with the European movement. Numerous and significant works attest to the fact that Latin American artists participated in the expressionist movement with a creative intensity and avant-garde vocation similar to that of the European painters.
