Abstract

This chapter reviews articles published in the Journal of Media Economics (1988–2016), International Journal on Media Management (1999–2016), and Journal of Media Business Studies (2004–2016) that focus on Asian countries and regions. Additionally, we analyze the research on media management and economics published in the Asian Journal of Communication (1990–2016). In the analysis of four journals, media management and economics research on Asia showed a gradual increase over time. Four countries (Korea, Japan, China, and Taiwan) accounted for the majority share of all research in Asia. The broadcasting, newspaper, and film industries are found to be the major areas for studies in Asia. The industrial organization model was most frequently adopted as the theoretical base. Methodologically, the quantitative approach was ahead of the qualitative approach and most often relied on secondary data. Lessons from the meta-review and suggestions for future research agendas about research on the Asian media industry follow.
