This chapter examines the security implications of Middle East political economy. It shows how economic sovereignty was securitized by the Arab nationalist movement; and how OPEC ostensibly weaponized oil to serve Arab national security. Oil had domestic security implications: it enabled the consolidation of authoritarianism and deterred democratization. Finally, oil is an issue in regional conflicts and a driver of oil wars.
