Abstract

Sometimes it seems as though the Dominatrix is everywhere. She permeates popular culture and media, brandishing her whip in music videos and finding her way into advertisements for even mundane products like snacks and hair spray. The popular television shows CSI (2000–2015), Law and Order: SVU (1999–), Private Practice (2007–2013) and House (2004–2012) have all included dominatrices as characters. Facebook even has a ‘dominate’ option on its SuperPoke application, personified by a corset-clad, whip-wielding cartoon avatar.
