Abstract

Research has shed light on an unprecedented number and range of factors that contribute to reading processes, including an array of textual and contextual factors. However, it has been difficult for researchers to capture and communicate these factors to reading educators, curriculum developers, and others who influence reading education. The field needs a model of reading that includes and unpacks the wide range and multiplicity of influences on reading processes. In this chapter, we attempt to use the metaphor of driving to provide a complex but accessible model for reading, with particular attention to the roles that textual and contextual factors play.
