Abstract

Our original discussion of this topic appeared in Reading Research Quarterly (Dillon, O'Brien, & Heilman, 2000) in response to the daunting task of predicting research trends as we ushered in the current millennium. Subsequent versions appeared in both the fifth and sixth editions of Theoretical Models and Processes of Reading. Now, since we first wrote on the topic of pragmatism and practicality, we have the advantage of looking back over nearly two decades of inquiry in the field to reflect upon what we have learned about pragmatism in the conduct of research.
