Abstract

Monica (pseudonym) was a 17-year-old young woman when I first met her in 2013 on the internationally diverse island of Dutch Sint Maarten, where she was born. Her mother immigrated from Curacao, another Caribbean island, to Sint Maarten, where she met Monica's father, a native-born citizen of Sint Maarten. Monica completed a portion of elementary education in Sint Maarten. Dutch, one of the nation's official languages, is a required curriculum subject. However, English is the dominant lingua franca of the Caribbean—the language in use in everyday social life and in most Sint Maarten schools. Accordingly, Monica was fluent in English and Dutch as well as her mother's native Papiamento.
