Abstract

Despite the growing application of Positioning Theory (hereafter, PT) to literacy and language research, other than one edited volume (McVee, Brock, & Glazier, 2011), there have been few direct explications of PT for literacy researchers. Within this chapter, our goal is to introduce readers to the theoretical and conceptual history of PT and some of its basic precepts. We explore common misconceptions and critiques of PT and describe some ways that language and literacy researchers have effectively used PT as a critical lens. We conclude with theoretical and methodological areas in need of further elaboration or development where literacy researchers can make significant contributions to PT.
