Abstract

Discussions about the literacy development of Black male students are largely disconnected from the rapid changes and significant advances occurring in the world and from the benefits of Black male contributions and participation. Instead, discussions are anchored by societal and personal challenges connected to race, poverty, and systemic oppression. Researchers, essayists, journalists, and novelists are writing about Black male students' literacy development ignoring the former, but not the latter. This results in a limited framing for students' literacy development and contributes to the challenges of moving these young males to advanced levels of literacy out of necessity, rather than limiting them to poorly conceptualized literacy practices that work to their detriment.
