Abstract

Education is regarded as a key factor for development, decent livelihood, and social change and it is one of the highest priorities of refugee communities. The lack of equitable access to quality education stands in the way of generating durable solutions for refugees and achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This chapter analyzes global educational strategies and policies designed and implemented for refugee groups. It gives an overview of education and lifelong learning approaches that are endorsed by international agencies and non-governmental institutions. It further explores the interaction of global frameworks for education of refugee populations with national laws and agendas, and whether they are actualized in the Indian context. This chapter emphasizes that while countries in the Global South are struggling to provide universal, inclusive, and quality education for most of its citizens, certain measures are required to provide access to education and lifelong learning opportunities for refugee communities.
