Abstract

This chapter aims to explain and assess the UK engagement, or rather re-engagement, with South Asia that has come to the fore in the last couple of decades. The presence of large migrant communities from South Asia in the UK generates complex interactions between domestic and foreign policy considerations and consequences for the UK vis-à-vis South Asia. As concerns UK re-engagement toward South Asia, since regional mechanisms are weak, UK re-engagement is primarily through bilateral relationships. Here, the UK relationship with India, especially post-Brexit, is the single most important bilateral relationship for the UK in South Asia, which reflects India's regional weight and international rise.
