Abstract

This chapter surveys the relatively new field of Black migration studies. It provides an assessment of the scholarship on Black forced and voluntary migration from colonial times to the present. In the last three decades, several scholars, journalists, and other writers have helped shed light on previously unknown individual migrant stories from around Latin America and the Caribbean. Other scholars have published analyses on Afro-Latin communities displaced within their own national borders or on those who have journeyed trans-nationally. This commented historiography provides student with a plethora of sources and insights into the impact of African-descendants beyond their homes and homelands.
