Abstract

At Darmstadt 1952, Nono again has intense exchanges with Stockhausen, Boulez and Goeyvaerts. Comparisons are made with Kreuzspiel and Structures. Common concerns are explored in the writings of Stockhausen and Boulez. Nono later insists that he never wrote ‘punktuelle Musik’. He encounters ideas from the electronic studio – both Schaeffer’s use of tape in musique concrete and the synthesis of elektronische Musik from the WDR studio in Cologne – the information theory approach of Meyer-Eppler and the technological graphical representations of Beyer. Herbert Eimert’s Lehrbuch der Zwölftontechnik is an important influence. Eimert presents the twelve-note series as a continuous, dynamical generator, especially in the form of the ‘all-interval series’ which Nono will use extensively.
