Abstract

Born in 1926, Nono attends high school under fascism. His father introduces him to Venetian musical life, including the maestro di cappella of St Marks and Malipiero, with whom Nono studies briefly at the conservatory. His father is not encouraging of a musical career. Nono also studies law in Padova during the German occupation, while working with the Resistance. He becomes a student and close friend of Bruno Maderna. They read books on composition by Hindemith and Leibowitz. They have contact with Luigi Dallapiccola. Nono and Maderna attend the course of Hermann Scherchen, their long-term mentor, together with Brazilian composer Eunice Katunda, who has a significant influence. An early interest in poetry is developed through contact with Giuseppe Ungaretti.
