Abstract

In this chapter, we summarize what is known about the collateral consequences women encounter after felony convictions and incarcerations including: increased difficulty obtaining employment, housing, or social services due to their felony record; problems reunifying with children; as well as returning to disadvantaged neighborhoods. Throughout, we summarize the balance of empirical research, as well as present new empirical work on the collateral consequences for women who have been convicted or incarcerated. Finally, we highlight recent and/or promising advances in theory and policy.
