Abstract

The author has a long career working in the area of citizen diplomacy and educational exchange and explains the nexus between the policy and governmental aims of public diplomacy officials and the value that citizens have in contributing to this process. Mueller spent 18 years inside the Institute of International Education, one of the most enduring organizations associated with citizen diplomacy, including serving as director of professional exchanges. Today she serves as the president of the professional alumni organization, the Public Diplomacy Council. An authoritative chapter with anecdotal support for valuing the strength of citizen diplomacy.
