Abstract

Gaffs, fairgrounds and street entertainments were complemented during the Industrial Revolution by pub entertainments. Distinctions are sometimes made between ‘free-and-easies’, ‘song-and-supper rooms’, early music halls and other pub entertainments, and there are some general characteristics which distinguish these forms. But it is unwise to be too pedantic. The Georgians were intensely sociable, and the pub was an obvious place to get together.
