Abstract

This chapter explores the intersections of race and gender in social movement contexts and offers alternative structures for creating a gender-free future via intersectional social movements, gender futurity, and Transfuturism. The author begins with a discussion of Black Lives Matter and Afrofuturism—two social movements that center the lived experiences of the Black diaspora in an attempt to create systemic change, while also falling short of producing gender freedom and inclusion. Then, using Black Lives Matter and Afrofuturism as departure points, the author argues for gender futurity using a case study in Transfuturism to unpack how our praxis can push the boundaries of gender embodiment and freedom.
