Abstract

Although the Frankfurt School had a huge influence on the West German student movement, its influence was complex and contradictory. The student movement was inspired by the Frankfurt School but also turned against it from 1967 onwards. The confrontation with the student movement also exposed differences between members of the Frankfurt School – in particular, between Theodor W. Adorno, Jürgen Habermas, Max Horkheimer, and Herbert Marcuse, whose relationships with the student movement are explored in this chapter.
