Abstract

We recently completed a three-year research project funded by the UK’s National Institute of Health Research (NIHR). The NIHR is fully funded by the UK government’s Department of Health and Social Care, which oversees the National Health Service (NHS) in England. Health services are devolved in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The project, identifying appropriate symbol communication aids for children (I-ASC), was a research collaboration that included six service users within the research team. The main aim of the project had been to explore ways to improve the health and wellbeing outcomes for children and young people who have little or no intelligible speech and need to use communication aids to communicate.
