Abstract

Media in Mauritania has had a significant influence on the government and the way it runs its affairs. It also plays a distinctive role in influencing public opinion, being the main source of information for the vast majority of people. The printed press has a long history in the country. The various stages of its development show that the Mauritanian press stood as a tool for freedom of expression instead of it being a tool for oppression and injustice in the hands of those in power. This chapter discusses the early stages as well as the development of newspapers and broadcasting media in Mauritania. It analyzes the various challenges and successes of the press in promoting the country’s struggle for independence from the time Mauritanian newspapers were launched by political parties in Senegal. It also discusses the struggle to create a public sphere of free debate among the political and educated elite.
