Abstract

This chapter gives an overview of the development of modern hospitality from its European origins to standardization and multiplying business formulas based on the American style of hospitality. Now, as Asia is rising as a strong economic powerhouse in an era that is advancing rapidly, a fresh look at the concept of hospitality from a cultural as well as a socio-economic perspective is needed. Based on the book Hospitality in Asia: A New Paradigm, this chapter conceptualizes the new Asian paradigm in hospitality based on that region’s unique culture, traditions, and social values. Based on the chapter, readers will understand how hospitality developed in different stages and was influenced by the characteristics of each era and continent. This chapter conceptualizes and helps us to understand what the pillars of Asian hospitality are and the differences between earlier stages and concepts.
