In 2013, the World Health Organization (WHO) recognised the systematic neglect of mental health across the world. 1 It is thus highly significant that in adopting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the global community for the first time included a target to ‘by 2030, reduce by one third premature mortality from non-communicable diseases through prevention and treatment and promote mental health and well-being’. 2 This target forms part of SDG3 which aims to ‘ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages’. 3
