Abstract

The need for better work-life balance is an increasingly important topic, especially given that burnout is now recognized as an “occupational phenomenon,” stemming directly from our collective crisis of workplace stress. Engaging in inclusive leadership and work-life balance is, therefore, timely and critical. Progressive leaders know they cannot afford to be putting off addressing underlying causes for burnout, the related retention issues, and lack of engagement, and that individuals they lead also need a more peaceful, productive, and healthy work environment. The attainment of work-life balance cannot be the sole responsibility of the employee or individual. There is an urgency for a more comprehensive form of leadership—inclusive leadership—to lead the kind of changes we need when the broader context and dominant form of leadership focus is on individuals attaining greater adaptability and resiliency. Inclusive leadership, through intentionality, specifically to be inclusive and integrative, can best support the carving out of work-life balance as a key aspect to individual and global wellbeing.
