Abstract

This chapter examines the concept of event studies as a generic term that is used to define the wider domain of events. The chapter considers the different definitions and typologies of events, focusing on the planned event. The chapter outlines the evolution of the field of event studies from both an academic and applied perspective. A framework is introduced to understand how we create knowledge about events along with a discussion of the planning, design and management of events. Other key themes addressed include event impact assessment and evaluation along with different discourses on events (e.g. the classical discourse; event tourism and event management).
