This chapter has a two-fold structure: first it provides a state-of-the-art critical analysis of the existing literature related to the communist legacies inherited by former communist societies. Second, based on documents available on the Internet (TV documentaries, newspapers, web pages, surveys and magazine articles) the authors propose a conceptual framework of societal attitudes towards the socialist heritage in Bulgaria as a country with controversial socialist legacies in the field of tourism. The analysis aims to investigate what happens to the communist-period heritage of Bulgaria and what the society’s attitudes, feelings, actions are towards this heritage in the post-communist period. Although this analysis is informed by literature that proposes concepts such as nostalgia and animosity, we attempt to increase the complexity of the spectrum of feelings and actions in order to paint a more complete picture of the society’s approaches. This research comprises numerous cases from the period 1989–2019 and draws a historical overview of the societal processes that have happened in Bulgaria during the post-communist period in relation to its communist heritage.
