Abstract

Children enter school with significant “meaningful differences” in levels of vocabulary knowledge (Hart & Risley, 1995). Some begin school with thousands of hours of exposure to books and experiences that develop rich and deep vocabularies; others come with limited experiences with words and concepts. Unfortunately, these differences widen as time goes on and may contribute to the difficulties many children experience in becoming readers (Becker, 1977; Cunningham & Stanovich, 1998; National Reading Panel, 2000.)
