Chile is one of the leading countries in Latin America. Although its population of 16.4 million is small compared to other countries in the region, its economy is strong and moves rapidly in the direction of that of developed countries. Per capita GDP was $8,875 in 2006 and inflation levels are low. Real GDP growth has fluctuated between 4 percent and 6 percent in the period 2003–2006.
