Each realm of work has a central mission, which reflects a basic societal need and which the practitioner should feel committed to realizing…. All practitioners should be able to state the core traditional mission of their own fields.… A good way of clarifying this sense of mission is to ask: “Why should society reward the kind of work that I do with status and certain privileges?” (Gardner, Csikszentmihalyi, & Damon, 2001, p. 10)
