Analysis in swimming has been, and continues to be, limited by the technical ability to quantify motion. Swimming motion occurs across air and water and results from forces which are both difficult to measure and unpredictable. While many authors have risen to the challenge of analysing swimming technique, much remains unknown. This chapter provides some insight into how knowledge has emerged and forecasts future research given the increasing ability to analyse aquatic motion afforded by methodological and technological advances.
