Abstract

The emergence of postmodern theory has signified a challenge to the traditional sociological discourse regarding deviance. One of the most distinctive aspects of the relatively new theoretical turn toward postmodernism is the fact that there are important epistemological differences relative to most modern theories of deviance. For example, postmodern theory promises only a partial explanation, to uncover partial truths, to reveal a partial reality. Postmodern theory, unlike its modern counterpart, does not pretend to explain deviance in its totality, and so it is less ambitious in its reach.
