Abstract

Ghana has a checkered history having been settled by many European countries. Beginning with the Portuguese, who named the region in West Africa the Gold Coast and spread the news in Western Europe that this region was rich in gold, spices, and “black ivory,” other European nations, including the Dutch, French, Swedes, and Danes, sailed to the Gold Coast. The Europeans built forts around their trading coasts. The Ashanti Kingdom was in control of the region at the time.
