Abstract

Looking at Asian migration over the longue durée helps us to remember that Asia is an arbitrary space. There is no form of “Asian” migration that is different from mobility in other parts of the world. Asia has encompassed a huge variety of mobilities and regional migration systems. And many of the most important migratory movements in human history have crossed the borders of what we now know as Asia. At best, Asia has emerged as an imaginative construct out of the minds of Europeans over the past 700 years, and the minds of Asians over the past 200 years.
