Until 8 May 1902 Marius Hurard was the editor of a local paper called Les Colonies. When all about him in Martinique the skies darkened and citizens began to react, he interviewed a science teacher at the local lycée (secondary or high school), a certain Gaston Landes (Scarth 2002). The interview ended with the conclusion, ‘Mont Pelée offers no more danger to the inhabitants of Saint-Pierre than Vesuvius does to those of Naples’.
