Disasters such as Hurricane Katrina, which struck the US Gulf Coast in 2005, and Cyclone Sidr, which struck Bangladesh in 2007, highlighted coasts as being hazardous places to live. On average, every year more than 100 million people are found to be exposed to tropical cyclone hazards worldwide (Pelling 2004). Countries with substantial populations located on coastal plains and deltas with a relatively high exposure to cyclones include India, Bangladesh, Honduras, Nicaragua, the Philippines and Vietnam.
