This chapter attempts to provide simple and practical guidelines to help those involved in disaster risk reduction (DRR) address their data and information needs, with a strong focus on quantitative data. DRR can be applied at many scales from community to global. Data and information needs vary accordingly. As practitioners work on more detailed scales, for example at community level, different sources of data will be needed. However, some needs are the same for everyone. Despite problems that are rather different at various scales, these common needs are the target of this chapter, given that in many cases these needs can be addressed using globally available data in the public domain. Additionally, researchers and practitioners should always seek other data produced locally and not necessarily available in electronic formats.
