Abstract

Family literacy programs that engage parents in leadership and advisory roles can change how adults engage with the world in ways that are not always self-evident or apparent. This chapter presents research and emerging practices from selected model programs that demonstrate the importance of engaging parents in substantive participatory forms of education, with a focus on developing social capital by supporting parents in authentic leadership and advisory roles in adult and family literacy programs.
