Abstract

Worldwide estimates suggest that 25 to 33 per cent of the global burden of disease is attributable to environmental factors, while infectious diseases are the actual leading cause of death (Clark 2001). Although these two sources of human morbidity and mortality have been studied extensively, far less attention has been paid to the ways in which they may interact, and thereby exacerbate their total adverse impact on human health. This chapter addresses this gap by examining a potential adverse interaction between lead poisoning and infectious disease.
