Abstract

In this chapter we overview research on learning to read Chinese. We first describe Chinese orthography and then summarize past findings on adults' cognitive processing of written language. Next, we review studies on Chinese children's reading acquisition. Finally, we outline previous work on Chinese reading impairment. There are a number of unique features of written Chinese that have important implications for reading and learning to read.
