Abstract

This language is spoken in two villages, one on Ifira island in Vila Harbour, and the other to the immediate northwest of Port Vila in Mele village (known to speakers of the language as Imere). Mutually intelligible dialects are spoken in the two villages, though the dialects differ in many details. This sketch is based exclusively on the Mele dialect. The combined population of the two villages at the 1989 census was 2326.
