Abstract

elsewhere in this book the scale and growth of Internet gambling is discussed, alongside predictions that its popularity will continue. For example, Global Betting and Gaming Consultants (see Chapter 3) discuss its trajectory, estimating that worldwide Internet gambling revenues tripled between 2004 and 2010. Such growth is impressive given the immense regulatory uncertainty surrounding the industry. Yet during this period there seemed to be a lag in associated research, the extent of which was disproportionately low. In late 2006, in response to, and in anticipation of, such growth, eCOGRA (eCommerce and Online Gaming Regulation and Assurance) sought to learn more about player behaviour, preferences, and attitudes and wanted to give players an opportunity to communicate their views, concerns, and approvals by commissioning the global online gambler report.
