Abstract

Organization theory, as a family relative of sociology, has always suffered from a strain in its theorizing that relates to the status of its analytic categories. Are these analytic categories best formed as a coherent whole abstracted from the sense that the members have of the everyday scenes of action that theory takes as its objects for data collection, reflection and analysis, or should its categories be somehow grounded in the sense that the members make? The first strain is towards what we might call analytic coherence; the other is to what one might call member coherence.
