Abstract

‘You cannot step into the same river twice, for fresh water is forever flowing towards you’, observed Heraclitus of Ephesus, a Greek philosopher of the late sixth century BCE. This ancient insight into the human condition is relevant today more than ever before. Spurred by the globalization of human activities and the increasing interface of cultural traditions, we are in the midst of a historically unprecedented scope and pace of change. Some of the most profound and all-encompassing changes are being experienced by people who move across cultural boundaries. Countless immigrants and refugees leave their familiar milieu to build a new home in a foreign land, along with numerous temporary sojourners – from diplomats, military personnel, missionaries and business employees to construction workers, athletes, artists, musicians, writers, professors and students.
