Abstract

In any investigation of sports participation, Norway, like its Nordic neighbours (fellow Scandinavian countries Denmark and Sweden together with Finland and Iceland), makes an interesting case study. In this chapter, I seek to shed light on what often appears as a kind of Nordic or, at least, Scandinavian, exceptionalism in the field of youth sport. 1 In the first instance, I offer an outline of relatively recent developments within youth sport in Norway followed by an attempt to provide a plausible explanation for the developments depicted. The data upon which the chapter is based is derived from two major and ongoing surveys. 2
