Abstract

Eating disorders (EDs) and disordered eating (DE) are most likely to occur in weight-sensitive sports. Both male and female athletes are at risk for developing EDs and DE. Screening, early identification, interdisciplinary treatment approaches and successful prevention strategies are needed to reduce risk and promote performance capacity with minimal health consequences in young people. This chapter includes the science and practice of ED in young athletes and begins with a discussion on the classification of ED/DE, their prevalence, signs and symptoms, health and performance consequences, and concludes with treatment and prevention modalities.
