Youth is a variably defined descriptor of the life stage between childhood and adulthood. In the context of the present volume, the age range 16–25 years has been suggested as a guide to evaluating health benefits of physical activity. From the perspective of growth and maturation, the proposed age range encompasses late adolescence and young adulthood in the majority of youth. Individual differences in timing and tempo of biological growth and maturation and behavioural development associated with puberty and the adolescent growth spurt occur in most youth before 16 years, but the impact may persist into later adolescence and young adulthood. The need to consider both biological and psycho-behavioural characteristics of youth is essential and highlights the need for researchers to adopt a biocultural perspective.
